Dato’ Abdul Razak bin Abdul Majid began his professional career with Lembaga Letrik Negara, now Tenaga Nasional Berhad in 1973. He completed his service to retire from the position of Senior Vice President (Corporate Affairs Division), Tenaga Nasional Berhad, having served the Company for 36 years. Prior to this, he held the position of Vice President (Generation) from 2004 till 2008, overseeing the successful turnaround of this core-business activity amidst the emergence of competitive performance from Private Powers Producers.

His career advancements in TNB included assignments on Planning and Construction and Operations in all three core divisions of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of the Utility Company. Upon his elevation as a Member of the Senior Executive Committee, he was appointed as Director on a number of Subsidiary Companies, involved in Project Development, Operations & Maintenance, Research & Development, Fuel Procurement& Logistics and Overseas Investment Undertakings. His exposure included various interactions with fellow Executives amongst the ASEAN Utilities on a broad range of technical exchange initiatives.

His experiences also recorded a three-year secondment term (1998-2001) to the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department, to assist in the studies and assessment on the prospects on the restructuring of the Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry.

Subsequent to his retirement from TNB, he was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of MyPOWER Corporation in 2010, a Special Purpose Company sponsored by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, with the primary objective of formulating reform initiatives for the Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry. The four year program has recommended outcomes which are currently being implemented.

In April 2014, Abdul Razak was appointed Chairman of Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission of Malaysia), the Regulatory Agency empowered to oversee the progressive development as well as efficient operations of the Electricity Supply Industry. The regulatory functions are also extended to cover the downstream Gas Industry.

Over his 4-year tenure which ended Mar 2018, he presided over a number of initiatives including streamlining capacity planning processes, competitive procurement of generation capacities for both conventional and renewable facilities, Oversight Panels for the Ringed-fenced Single Buyer & System Operations entities, Incentive-Based Regulatory framework for both electricity and gas supply networks incorporating fuel cost pass-through mechanism. He also guided through the enactment of the activity-based Third Party Access for the Gas Supply Industry. In addition to various other institutional building programs, he promoted a continual engagement program with all stakeholders associated with the industry.

Abdul Razak, 67, majored in Electrical Engineering for his graduate program at Brighton University UK in 1973 and subsequently gained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Ohio University, USA in 1995. His service of more than 40 years in the public sector has been acknowledged as he adorns the Federal meritorious awards of Johan Setia Mahkota (J.S.M), Kesatria Mangku Negara (K.M.N.) and Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (D.S.P.N) from his home state, Pulau Pinang.

Presently he also chairs the Energy Council of Malaysia.
